Southern Steel’s Charlotte plant is a state-of-the-art
facility that offers one of the largest and most advanced
steel fabrication centers in the United States. The facility
combines the skill and experience of its Charlotte workforce
with the latest technology to ensure the highest quality,
accuracy and productivity.
With 200,000 square feet of shop space and an annual capacity
of 100,000 tons, the shop’s production capabilities include:
· All structural steel needs
· Rolled angle and plate
· All connection and template material
· Complicated weldments (frames, hoppers, platforms, etc.)
· Large trusses up to 600 ft. span
· Plate Girders
· Sophisticated paint system
Two of the shop’s four bays are 85 feet wide, 600 feet long
and 70 feet high, which enable the plant to preassemble truss
sections up to 600 feet and to fabricate other large and
complex assemblies.
The capabilities of the plant to handle large assemblies are
enhanced by the capacities of its cranes, including two 35-ton
cranes, six 30-ton cranes and 30 other smaller cranes ranging
from one to five tons. Southern Steel’s cranes can lift
loads in excess of 60 tons.
The facility is
certified by the American Institute of Steel Construction for
Category I and Category II steel structures and for
Sophisticated Paint.
Two rail spurs, with in-bound and out-bound service, and close
proximity to I-77 and I-85, enable the Charlotte center to
ship economically to any site in the nation, including all
ports, for international shipping.
